The Cisco ATA-186 (I-1) router is becoming the industry standard connecting your telephone directly to your Cable or DSL broadband internet connection without the need for a computer. Telephone gateway providers that support the ATA-186 are replacing land-line phones across the country. The ATA-186 connects a telephone and a Local Area Network (LAN) Router (such as Linksys and D-Link products). The LAN splits the DSL or Cable modem between more than one device (2 Computers, Cisco ATA-186, etc). Telephone gateways terminate phone calls between the ATA-186 router and the regular telephone system. You can also get a local phone number to receive telephone calls just like a regular phone. Depending upon which telephone gateway provider you choose, you will need to configure the ATA 186 router with the gateway IP address and your user name and password information to make and receive calls.
